paper construction by Jen Stark

Amazing paper craft by Jen Stark.
These are my favourites.

graffitti

I just found these via Camilla Engman's blog. There are more pictures over at Truthtag. I really like these. They interact with their environments in such a way that they sometimes have a sense of being living organisms. I'd love to find these creeping around the corner of a tatty old towerblock or on the back of a road sign.

architecture in helsinki

This has been around for ages, but I still love it - pretty strange little video for Architecture in Helsinki with some sweet characters.

How to be a big fish....

My fish illustration was printed earlier this week. Here it is in context in a flyer designed by 3Sixty

Letterpress xmas cards finally finished!

Here they are then, fresh from the letterpress - my finished xmas cards, ready for December!
Printed on beermat board to get a nice deep impression off the letters (yes I know it's not supposed to make an impression but it looks nice!)
I have an idea to punch a hole in one of these around xmas and string some ribbon through to hang on the tree. I think that'd look pretty good.

fun designs by Alyson Fox and Camila Prada

I found these gorgeous scarves by Alison Fox on Greener Grass Design

There are also some great drawings and fashion illustrations on her website.
I also found these pieces by Camila Prada via the Soma gallery, in the shop section. The Soma gallery is located in Bristol, by the way, and worth a look if you're in the area.

(salt and pepper pots -'booty shakers')

(sugar shaker -'sweet talker')

(money box -'big G')

paint!

Wow! A lot of paint was used in this advertisement! Worth a watch.

letterpress xmas cards revisited

A much more triangular tree shape!
Still looks a bit like an arrow... I think next week I will set the "merry xmas" in a separate block so that I can print it in a different colour. Might even add a star in too!
Been printing them on some nice biodegradable 'beermat' material ...at last! - A xmas card you can use to catch drink spillages after the season of festive cheer is over. Now that's what everyone needs for xmas.

things of interest...

Mmmmm, I found these lovely bits and pieces over at Antoine et Manuel.
I particularly like this piece titled Parisian Metro... I wonder if anyone has made one for London? That could be an interesting project.

These wall decorations are lovely too. Some of their designs are modular, so that you can create your own custom patterns for your walls. Nice!

I also enjoy the work of Sanna Annukka

And in other news, here's a quick little illustration of my own... I like drawing fish, they have very grumpy faces!

paper cuts

This week I've been looking at these beautiful, exquisitely crafted paper-cuts from Mister Rob Ryan

It's worth taking the time to look at the large versions on the website as well, so you can read the the little stories intricately cut into many of them.

letterpress christmas card

Hallo,

So, this week at letterpress I thought I'd have a go at something useful... last week's attempt went a bit awry, hence the 'type faces' post, where I recycled my type into characters.

Anyway, since I'm generally terrible at remembering to go and buy xmas cards let alone send them, I thought I'd start reaaaaally early and make some nice letterpress ones.
I came up with a quick concept to set a translation of 'O Tannenbaum' in the shape of a Christmas tree, and did a quick version in Illustrator to try and figure out roughly the proportional sizes I'd have to use to make the lines form a good Christmas tree shape.

That done, it was off to letterpress, where nothing is ever straightforward. Some muddling about with word spacing and type sizes later, and here is the result.

Sort of a Christmas tree :P
So, next week there will be some fun with letter-spacing and setting the 'trunk' and hopefully some green ink, and when all that is done I'm hoping to set some random 'O's and a star in a different colour and print over the top.
Watch this space.

I love these pieces of furniture inspired by nature! They would put a little bit of magic into anyone's home. See more designs over at Shawn Lovell Metalworks.
